Sourcing the Barenaked Ladies album Gordon as a soundtrack of the year, Michael V. Smith’s long poem of the same name reflects on the AIDS crisis’ impact on Toronto’s queer community in 1992. Gordon is a history and a memorial, an act of resistance and an act of love, both tender and cutting at once.

Michael V. Smith works across many creative genres. A writer, filmmaker and performer, he has been publishing books, doing drag, and making videopoems for over twenty-five years. Gordon is from a larger full-length lyric memoir, Soundtrack, to be published by Book*hug in Fall 2025.
