Shelter These Hungry Animals

KRISTIN BURNS

Volleying between two formative events of violence separated by thirteen years, Shelter These Hungry Animals is a masterful example of the remarkable complexity a short story can contain. Burns’s skill for imbuing a single moment, a fleeting glance, or a small, withheld truth with grave, transformative power makes every scene beautifully layered and rife with atmospheric tension. Through rhythmic, propulsive sentences akin to Cormac McCarthy’s and lucid images attuned to the sharpest of details, this story will haunt you long after you’ve finished reading.

Kristin is a queer MFA graduate from UBC Okanagan. She’s lived in Slovakia, and South Korea and has travelled around Asia and Europe but she finds the most inspiration for her writing closer to home. She’s interested in hypnagogic blips and writing stories that wiggle around in the deepest parts of us. She’s appeared in SubTerrain and Carousel Magazine and has placed in the Okanagan Short Story Contest twice, with this story being the second-place prize in 2021. She lives in Kelowna with her cat Edgar and enjoys learning new art forms to spend too much money on.
