Taking Care of Dead Plants

MARISSA THOMPSON

Taking Care of Dead Plants is a delicate, clear-eyed story about Nan, a beloved family member who voluntarily chooses a physician-assisted suicide, told from the point of view of Lucy, Nan’s young granddaughter. Nan and Lucy are bound by a shared love of plant-tending, and leafy vines become emblems of the tenacity and beauty of life. With a touch of magic realism, Marissa Thompson gives us a poignant and mysterious story about finding consolation through the living legacies of people we love. This is a subtle and profound short story that surprises and moves us, from beginning to end.
